This trend went viral on TikTok. Our food columnist Vivi wanted to know what’s up and took a close look at the Internal Shower Detox Drink.

In the summer, we not only want to dress lightly, we also want to feel light. Some even start a detox cure and use the hot temperatures to take a short break from solid food, as the appetite often remains small in the heat anyway. A TikTok user thought the same thing and created a new trend drink for it, which, in addition to health benefits, is also supposed to help with weight loss. I don’t think much of any crash diets, but a bit of a detox for internal cleansing of our body sounds more tempting.

The recipe: How to mix the detox drink

Ingredients for a glass:

  • 250ml of water
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 squeeze of fresh lemon juice

Preparation:

  1. Fill a glass with lukewarm water and add the chia seeds.
  2. Stir once and let the chia seeds soak for about five to ten minutes.
  3. Then add the lemon juice, stir once – done.

Tip: For a better effect, it is recommended to drink the detox drink on an empty stomach. So 30 minutes before breakfast or 90 minutes after the last meal.

Internal Shower Drink: That’s what it’s supposed to do

But now we have to take a look at what the drink promises us and what the health benefits of the ingredients really are. The list of ingredients of water, chia seeds and lemon sounds like one at first low-calorie and refreshing drink. In addition to the refreshment, it is also said that the chia drink prevents bloating and stimulates digestion (reading tip: constipation: how it occurs and what helps against it). In addition, the vitamin C from the lemon should make the skin glow and the drink should prevent a hangover after looking too deeply into the glass. So have we found the holy grail of detox drinks here?

Health Benefits

Let’s check the facts: Chia seeds contain many healthy fiber, protein and plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. This is definitely healthy for our body and if you let the chia seeds soak in water for about 5-10 minutes, they have one too digestive effect (Without sources rather the opposite!). In certain cases, the seeds can definitely prevent a bloated stomach and also ensure fewer intestinal problems after a night of partying. The vitamin C from the lemon can provide a nice kick of freshness, especially before breakfast, and give you a good body feeling. Quite apart from the immune boost.

My conclusion

So all in all, the drink is definitely worth trying, although I’d like to point out that it’s a bit slimy consistency takes getting used to is and certainly does not meet every taste. However, I cannot give a general answer as to what health and cleansing effects it ultimately has on your individual body. When it comes to detox, opinions differ anyway. Some swear by it and hope to lose some weight as a side effect, others drive a juice cleanse or other food deprivation completely insane. One thing is certain: the ingredients are healthy, the drink has almost no calories and you are doing your intestines a favor by drinking a glass of chia water every now and then.

Vivi’s top tip

Whether with or without an internal shower drink, you decide what is good for you and your body and makes you feel good. You can’t go wrong with the Internal Shower Drink, but you should do not drink more than one chia drink per day or even use it as a food substitute over a longer period of time.
