Interstellar: Nolan ‘stole’ a scene from another sci-fi movie

Back to the famous film by Christopher Nolan, and a short sequence that seems to have been borrowed from another science fiction film: the unknown Event Horizon by Paul WS Anderson.

A pen and a simple sheet of paper.

When trying to explain to Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) how a wormhole works, and how the Endurance ship will manage to cross the universe, Romilly (David Gyasi) uses these two objects to illustrate his comments.

Having folded the sheet in half, he pierces it with the pen to evoke the curvature of space which will allow the ship to pass instantly from point A to point B.

This small sequence, which occurs in the middle of Interstellar and which allows the spectators to understand how the journey of the characters will unfold, was borrowed from another science fiction film, much less famous than that of Christopher Nolan.

Indeed, in 1998, came out Event Horizon: the ship from beyond, by Paul WS Anderson. A kind of space Hellraiser which had not made much noise in rooms, but which had ended up finding its public thanks to its video exploitation.

We followed the crew of the vessel “Lewis & Clark”, sent on a reconnaissance mission to explore the wreckage of another missing building, near Neptune. In one of the film’s scenes, Dr. William Weir, a scientist played by Sam Neill, explains to his teammates the concept of the wormhole, just as Romilly will do 15 years later, in Nolan’s film.

“I forgot that!”told us Paul WS Anderson last August, on the occasion of the release of his film in a 4K collector’s box.

“It’s the scene where one of the actors stabs through a folded sheet of paper to explain a scientific concept. It’s totally taken from the same scene in Event Horizon. As they say, ‘If you have to fly, fly from the best. “So if someone steals some ideas from me, I can’t really complain!”

The same explanation was also taken up by the character of Natalie Portman in Thor: Love And Thunder, released last summer, with a mention to the two feature films: Interstellar and Event Horizon.
