INTERVIEW. Vaëlle (The Voice): “In Quebec, you can live from music without being Celine Dion!”

The 30-year-old Quebec singer reveals herself during the last premium blind auditions, with a formidable cover of Harry Styles’ Sign of the Times.

CLOSER Why did you cross the Atlantic to take part in The Voice?

VAELLE Because I love France, even if I don’t know if it’s mutual! (She laughs.) I already took part in the very first Quebec edition, ten years ago. I was eliminated in the quarter-finals and, given my young age at the time, that was already a feat! I was 19 years old and I was far too influenced by a bad entourage. In addition, I suffered from eating disorders and I refused to assume the artist that I was. The life of a teenager who feels bad about herself…

Ten years later, how are you?

I finally met myself. And it was time! For five years, I traveled the world with a jazz band. I don’t regret anything but, jazz singer, it’s really not my universe. I was hiding behind a character with dresses, high heels and I felt like a useless trinket that we put on a table. People complimented me more on my looks than on my voice. After five years, I finally had the courage to show my true artistic side. I was tired of being part of other people’s projects.

“No memory” of his performance

What were you doing before you blind auditioned?

In my country, it is possible to make a living from music without being Celine Dion! Yes, I live modestly, but at least I sing with my guitar in weddings, bars and small concert halls. I am composing and I hope to be able, one day, to make listen to my songs.

You who are used to singing in front of the public, how did you feel in front of the four coaches?

The exercise of blind auditions is very difficult, I was more than nervous. I didn’t think I was so vulnerable. Besides, I have almost no memory of my performance. I just know that I was yelling at myself while I was singing. I said to myself: “But you’re not fair at all…” The French are easy to criticize and I was very afraid of being picked up by a coach. Like, “What you’re doing sucks.” But no matter the outcome of The Voice, I regret nothing.
