Iran: second execution linked to the demonstrations


Executed on Monday, Majidreza Rahnavard was sentenced to death for the murder of two security agents, the country’s judicial authority agency announced.

Iran carried out a second execution on Monday linked to the protests that have rocked the country for three months, announced Mizan online, the country’s judicial authority agency.

Majidreza Rahnavard, who was sentenced to death on November 29 for the November 17 stabbing murder of two security guards and wounding four otherswas executed in public in Mashhad, the agency said. He had been arrested on November 19 while trying to flee the country, according to Mizan online.

Multiple convictions abroad

Iran is facing protests sparked by the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who died after she was arrested by vice squad for violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.

The first execution took place on Thursday. Mohsen Shekari, 23, had been sentenced to death for blocking a street and injuring a paramilitary at the start of the protests. The announcement of his execution had provoked multiple condemnations abroad as well as from the UN.
