“It lasted two seconds”: Big mistake by William Leymergie on the air, the sanction did not take long

On February 16, 2024, Europe 1 listeners had the pleasure of hearing an interview with William Leymergie, in the show Culture Media by Thomas Isle. And the C8 presenter made a revelation concerning his ouster from the 1 p.m. news on Antenne 2.

You always have to turn your tongue seven times in your mouth before speaking and William Leymergie had a little reminder in the 80s. From 1986 to 1989, the 77-year-old presenter was in charge of the 1 p.m. news on Antenne 2. But a simple sentence changed everything, as he confided to Thomas Isle. Despite the good audiences, Sophie Davant’s companion was thanked by the production. “I was fired because I displeased a channel president…“, he confided at first.

One sentence too many for William Leymergie

William Leymergie then detailed: “I don’t know what his name was anyway. At the time, when channel presidents were appointed, they came to greet viewers in the Newspapers. It fell on me! I did not know him. He sat across from me, [je lui ai posé des questions], at the end he gets up and goes in front of a camera! And there, the mistake on my part, I said on the air: ‘And yes, it’s a job.‘It lasts two seconds, but as I say this, I tell myself that I would have done better to shut up.“

William Leymergie was right to think so because, five minutes later, the president in question came back and said “a gesture of the hand, as if to say: ‘You, you’re toast’“.”And he fired me three months later. (…) So they sent me back to Télématin”, he concluded. The presenter took back the reins of the show which he had abandoned to concentrate on the newspaper, until 2017. Since then, he has presented William at noonon C8 and is surrounded by a team of columnists, the former emblematic figure of TPMP Caroline Ithurbide, Caroline Delage and Antoni Ruiz. His daughter-in-law Valentine Sled was also by his side for a few months to talk about cooking.
