“It was fun!” : Nicolas Sarkozy breaks the silence and evokes the candidacy of Valérie Pécresse

Silent before the first round of the presidential election, Nicolas Sarkozy spoke in the columns of Paris Match. The former head of state assures that he believed in Valérie Pécresse to qualify for the second round.

For the Republicans and Valérie Pécresse, his silence was deafening. During the candidate’s presidential campaign, the former President of the Republic preferred not to support her officially. In private, Nicolas Sarkozy even described his former minister as “non-existent” in the race for the Elysée. However, he believed in the qualification of Valérie Pécresse in the second round of the presidential election. “Of course it was playable, he assured in the columns of Paris Matchthis Thursday, April 14. Candidate LR chose to be very tough with candidate Macron, but her proposals could not break through. If he believed in the chances of the Republican candidate, Nicolas Sarkozy believes that his plan of attack was not good. “Valérie could not, at the same time, accuse him of being the gravedigger of France and say that he took our ideas from us”he regrets.

But in private, the words of Nicolas Sarkozy would have been much less tender with regard to Valérie Pécresse. “Valérie goes in all directions. Already, if in a campaign, you manage to print one or two ideas, it’s a miracle! (…) But there, who is talking about Valérie Pécresse?he would have wondered in particular, according to Le Figaro. We can’t say that she sells dreams, she doesn’t have a lot of creativity. The hardest part of a campaign is getting the second stage of the rocket off the ground. At the moment, it is not in orbit.” If some assured that he would even go so far as to officially support Emmanuel Macron before the first round, Nicolas Sarkozy chose to remain silent. But after the qualifications of the outgoing president and Marine Le Pen, he clearly showed his preference: on April 24, he will vote for Emmanuel Macron.

Nicolas Sarkozy: “The interest of France must be our only guide”

If he chose the candidate President it is because he thinks “that it has the necessary experience in the face of a serious international crisis that is more complex than ever, because its economic project puts the promotion of work at the center of all its priorities, because its European commitment is clear and unambiguous”, as he wrote in a press release. For his predecessor, the current tenant of the Elysée is “as things stand, the only one in a position to act” : “The interest of France must be our only guide. We are never wrong in choosing clarity and consistency”. According to Paris Matchthe two men even saw each other at the Elysee Palace before the first round of the presidential election. “I am consistent with what I have always done. The “ni-ni” has never brought luck to the Gaullist movementhe assured our colleagues. Ni-ni is choosing Le Pen. The ni-ni is disappearance.”
