Marine Le Pen’s National Rally hailed the victory of Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Fratelli d’Italia party, in the legislative elections this Sunday in Italy. In reality, the two parties advocate sometimes different lines, and the formation of Giorgia Meloni would be closer to that of Éric Zemmour.

The National Rally does not hide its joy after the victory of the right-wing coalition led by Giorgia Meloni in Italy. Marine Le Pen hailed on Monday “Italy’s takeover of its destiny by electing a patriotic and sovereignist government”. Yet there are deep differences between the RN and Fratelli d’Italia, the far-right party led by what is expected to be Italy’s next head of government.

A very conservative line on the side of Meloni

The two women know each other but no longer had regular contact. The former French presidential finalist happens to be closer to Legua boss Matteo Salvini.

On the societal level, the differences between the two political formations are clear. Giorgia Meloni is on a very conservative line, unlike the National Rally. The future president of the Italian Council promotes the traditional Christian family, and has LGBT associations in her sights. For its part, the RN remains deliberately vague on this subject.

Common points between Fratelli d’Italia and the National Rally

Then, Giorgia Meloni is a liberal, while Marine Le Pen is not. Internationally too, the differences are strong: Fratelli d’Italia is pro-NATO, unlike the National Rally.

But the two parties also have things in common. They both denounce the policy of Brussels, want to review the rules of globalization and defend a firmer migration policy. In reality, the party of Giorgia Meloni is closer to that of Éric Zemmour, Reconquête, which holds the same conservative, liberal discourse, and which advocates the union of the rights.
