The chief prosecutor of the city of Verbania, Olimpia Bossi, told the TV channel RAI. As reported by the daily La Stampa, the judge saw no reasons to keep the men in custody, as they could not escape and there was no risk of evidence being manipulated. However, one of the men was placed under house arrest.
Last Sunday, a cable car gondola connecting the city of Stresa on Lake Maggiore with the nearby Mottarone mountain fell to the ground. 14 people were killed in the incident. Thereupon, according to the police, the owner of the cable car and two employees were arrested.
The three men switched off a safety brake system that started repeatedly and stopped the cable car from operating. The public prosecutor’s office thereupon initiated investigations, inter alia, on suspicion of negligent homicide. (SDA)
