it’s the end of an era for this iconic game

The Witcher franchise will soon turn the page for one of its most iconic games. A final message was therefore sent to the fans accordingly.

The Witcher is above all a series of novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. The latter was declined into video games, Netflix series and even board games. Suffice to say that the franchise has a certain success to the point of extending to numerous mediums. In video games, CD Projekt Red is responsible for starting work on the various productions of the license. And there is one that will soon be abandoned by the developers after years of regular updates.

The Witcher no longer wants to play cards

Last year, the Polish studio announced that it no longer planned to follow up on the development of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. As its name suggests, it’s a free card game in which we can collect our favorite characters from this universe to make them fight in solo or competitive mode. Many updates have been made to the title since its release in order to inflate its content. Player interest has thus been maintained over time, but that may change. Indeed, in a video concerning Gwent, one of the thinking heads behind the game dropped the ax. 11.10 will be the last update that CD Projekt will release for this spin-off of The Witcher.

The studio had been clear. Once he considered the card roster complete, he would move on. And that’s exactly what he’s going to do. However, that doesn’t mean that the Gwent: The Witcher Card Game servers will close. The future is in the hands of the players. This is the latest update prepared by the developers for Gwent. After that, we won’t make any more changes to the maps. Instead, we will use a special system: the Balance Board “. To be part of this Council, one of these three conditions can be met: be Prestige 1, have won 25 games in Ranked, or have reached rank 0.

Members of the Balance Council can thus vote each month to add changes to the different leader cards or abilities in this The Witcher game. There must be at least 50 votes on a card, for example, for a modification to be made on its cost or its power. Therefore, even if the developers turn the page on Gwent, they leave the keys to the community. It can now do as it sees fit to dictate the future of the game.

What future for the license?

But then, where will the team that took care of Gwent go? We must not forget that there are currently three The Witcher projects in development. A new trilogy which will be initiated by The Witcher 4, a remake of the very first episode and the mysterious Project Sirius. We do not yet know exactly the status of the progress of these games. However, we know that the development of the Sirius spin-off has encountered setbacks. It is therefore possible that the developers of Gwent have been sent to reinforce this game. That said, it is also possible that they have gone to work on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. In any case, they will have plenty to do.
