James Cameron already has ideas for Avatar 6 and 7, but with or without him?

The director of the Avatar saga sets out to finish Avatar 3, Avatar 4 And Avatar 5 until 2031. But creativity is a pot and that of James Cameron does not seem ready to die out: he is already thinking about the sixth and seventh film. Without him in the making.

We will have to wait until December 2025 to see Avatar 3 At the movie theater. Afterwards, Avatar 4 is expected for 2029, and finally Avatar 5 for 2031. But the saga will perhaps not end there: James Cameron has just confided, in an interview, that he was already starting to consider the future.

The question of success no longer really arises for Avatar. While the first opus is the biggest success in box office history, the second, The Way of Water, released in 2022, today climbs to 3rd place. The director therefore has reason to be confident.

“Mortality is catching up with us”

We completely wrote the fifth film “, explains James Cameron to People magazine on February 5, 2024. “ And I have ideas for the sixth and the seventh, although I’ll probably pass the baton at that point. »

James Cameron seems determined to dedicate the rest of his life to this saga. He is nevertheless aware that the production deadlines for a work of such visual ambition place the saga in a temporality that he will undoubtedly not be able to follow: the director is now 69 years old – he will be 74 when the film is released. ‘Avatar 5. We can therefore imagine that he would be around 80 years old if Avatar 6 And 7 were subsequently released in cinemas.

Mortality catches up with us “, he admits, before adding that he deeply enjoys working on this saga and with ” great people “.

James Cameron could therefore remain connected to the project during his lifetime regarding the guidelines of the scenario, but without being involved in the production. Another director would then come and succeed him. It remains to be seen whether it will be possible to produce such high-quality works and reproduce the success of the first two films over seven opuses, especially without the initial creator. With his recent declarations, however, James Cameron does not seem to want so much to pull on the rope as to accomplish his ideas – like the project of a lifetime -, and box office success rolls out the red carpet for him.

People always ask, ‘Why do you keep working on the same thing? For what [George] Did Lucas continue to work on the same thing? For what [Gene] Did Roddenberry continue to work on the same thing?’ », evokes James Cameron, regarding his career now entirely focused on Avatar, before responding: “ Because when you’ve made such a connection with people, why waste it? Why start over with something else that might not work? “.

In the short term, production of the next films is already largely underway: scenes fromAvatar 3 and D’Avatar 4 have already been filmed for The Way of Water. The third opus is finished, and in post-production. Half of the fourth remains to be shot.
