(sda) The Swiss women could not follow up in Garmisch on the day after the double success in the downhill in the Super-G. The fastest Swiss Ski rider was surprisingly Jasmina Suter from Schwyz in seventh place.

Downhill winner Corinne Suter was 8th at the same time as Joana Hählen. Jasmine Flury, second in the downhill, had to make do with a place outside the top 20 this time.

The Italian Federica Brignone and the Austrian Cornelia Hütter shared the victory. For Brignone it is the third success in this discipline this season. Hütter finished 1st for the first time in over four years and a downhill victory in Lake Louise. Behind the winning duo, an Austrian trio with Tamara Tippler, Mirjam Puchner and Nadine Fest ranked 3rd to 5th.

As in the downhill, some of the top riders were not at the start. For example Lara Gut-Behrami and Michelle Gisin as well as Sofia Goggia, Mikaela Shiffrin or Ragnhild Mowinckel.

(sda) After finishing 6th on Friday, Edoardo Mortara wins the second race of the season in Formula E in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. The Frenchman with Italian roots thus also takes the lead in the world championship standings.

After missing pole position by just five-thousandths of a second, Mortara put in a strong performance in the floodlit race. The Swiss from the Mercedes customer team Venturi took the lead halfway through the race and confidently defended it to the finish. Dutchman Robin Frijns and teammate Lucas di Grassi climbed onto the podium with Mortara.

After his victories in Hong Kong (2019) and Mexico (2021), it was Mortara’s third triumph in the electric racing series. In the World Championship standings, last year’s World Championship runner-up now leads four points ahead of defending champion Nyck de Vries (Mercedes).

It was another disappointment for Sébastien Buemi, the second Swiss in Formula E. After 17th place on Friday, the 2016 champion missed out on the points again in 14th place.

The third of a total of 16 races of the season will take place on February 12 in Mexico City. The season ends on 13./14. August with a double event in Seoul.

(sda) Gregor Deschwanden made it into the top ten in the first of two World Cup competitions in Willingen. The competition, which was affected by the wind, was scored after just one round.

Deschwanden used the favorable conditions in Germany for a flight to 133 meters. This resulted in 10th place in the final ranking. The winner Ryoyu Kobayashi, who found conditions similar to those from Lucerne, touched down after 145 meters. The winner of the Four Hills Tournament achieved the seventh win of the season.

Killian Peier sailed on 126 meters with less updraft and finished 13th. The Romand had skipped the previous weekend in Titisee-Neustadt. Several athletes are taking a break just before the Olympic Games in Beijing. Among others, Simon Ammann and Dominik Peter are without. However, only two of the top 20 in the World Cup rankings were missing, which improves Deschwanden’s second top ten place this season.

With the win, Kobayashi took over the lead in the overall World Cup from Karl Geiger. The German only came in 19th place. The Slovenian Anze Lanisek, who has recently been on the World Cup podium three times in a row, was even worse off with 104.5 meters and only 34th place.

(sda) The crowd favorites Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis made the sporty “Australia Day” perfect at the Australian Open in Melbourne with their triumph in the men’s doubles. The close-knit duo, who had offered a lot of spectacle during the tournament, prevailed in the Australian final against Max Purcell / Matthew Ebden 7:5, 6:4.

Even the final was not without excitement. Shortly before the end of the game, at Kyrgios’ insistence, security escorted three spectators away after they called in during a Purcell serve.

Athletics: Simon Ehammer improves the Swiss indoor record in the long jump

(sda) During a heptathlon in Aubière, France, Simon Ehammer smashed the Swiss indoor record in the long jump. The 21-year-old from Appenzell flew 8.26 meters in his first attempt and improved Rolf Bernhard’s record from 1981 by 25 centimeters. Ehammer thus also met the limit for the World Indoor Championships in March in Belgrade, which is 8.22 meters in the long jump.

Geneva/Servette – ZSC Lions 3:0 (2:0, 0:0, 1:0) . – 5025 spectators. – Goals: 16. Vinnik 1:0. 19. Winnik (Vatanen, Tömmernes / Quenneville excluded) 2-0. 59. Vermin (Vouillamoz / into the empty goal) 3:0. – For the first time since December 10 and twelve games, the ZSC Lions have not scored a point in a game. Next to the ice, plans for the future are progressing.

This is what we noticed: It is and remains the most difficult starting position: to play two games within 24 hours and in the second comparison to meet a team that was without a game the night before. A rested Geneva/Servette that had become fundamentally stronger since the change of coach from Patrick Émond to Jan Cadieux in mid-November gave ZSC no chance in the final game before the Olympic break. Even if Cadieux was absent due to illness.

Striker Daniel Winnik, in Canada’s Olympic squad in Beijing, made the early decision with two goals. The ZSC lacked the ailing playmaker Garrett Roe – and in the tenth game this month also the freshness. And last but not least, the discipline. Striker John Quenneville alone conceded three two-minute penalties, while Sven Andrighetto was sent into the shower shortly after the middle of the game for a check from behind against young Theo Campagna.

In the afternoon, the Zurich team announced the extension of the contract with fourth-line center Reto Schäppi (31) by one year plus an option for an additional season. Former national player Schäppi has spent his entire career in the ZSC organization.

During the Olympic break, other players are likely to join ZSC, such as U-20 international Lionel Marchand and winger Simon Bodenmann. EHC Kloten had also tried to get the long-time national player Bodenmann, 33, in the event of promotion. But Bodenmann says: “I would like to stay at ZSC, that’s my first priority.” Zurich will definitely be left by the Swiss players goalie Lukas Flüeler (resignation), defender Johann Morant (contract will not be extended, career continuation uncertain) and striker Marco Pedretti (to Lausanne). Handball: Spain and Sweden in the European Championship final

(sda) Spain’s handball players are in the European Championship final for the fourth time in a row. The 2018 and 2020 champion defeated world champion Denmark in the semi-finals in Budapest 29:25 and will meet record European champions Sweden in the final on Sunday.

In the duel between the world and European champions, the Danes got off to a better start against Spain and led 14:13 at the break. Ten minutes after the break, Spain took the lead for the first time and didn’t give it up until the end. The best pitcher for the Iberians was Aleix Gomez with eleven goals.

In the second semi-final between Olympic champions France and World Cup runners-up Sweden, a long-time teammate of Andy Schmid slipped into the key role at the Rhein-Neckar Löwen. The Swedish goalie Andreas Palicka was the outstanding man on the field when he came back to the tournament after surviving a corona infection. The 35-year-old not only made numerous brilliant saves, but also scored three goals in the narrow 34:33 victory of the Swedes. The Scandinavians are aiming for their fifth European title on Sunday.
