(Boursier.com) — JCDecaux SA, the world leader in outdoor advertising and a pioneer in self-service bicycles, announces that the vel’OH! recorded a record with a 400% increase in rentals in 2021 compared to 2018. The vel’OH! is part of the contract won by JCDecaux in 2017 for street furniture and electric-assisted self-service bicycles for the City of Luxembourg. Thus, the city of Luxembourg is one of the very first European capitals to benefit from a service with 100% electric-assisted self-service bicycles.

JCDecaux operates 1000 vel’OH! distributed in 116 stations, via a network extended to peripheral municipalities. With its on-board battery system, recharged at the station, vel’OH! means freedom for every user. Particularly suited to the steep topography of Luxembourg City, these electrically assisted bicycles that can travel up to 25km/h allow users to travel long distances and reach high stations with ease.

The choice of the City of Luxembourg to set up a fleet of 100% electrically assisted self-service bicycles is a winning decision. With more than 20,000 long-term subscribers as of December 31, 2021 (i.e. 150% more than at the end of 2018), self-service bicycles are a popular means of transport for residents and visitors to the Luxembourg capital. In 2021, the success of the service is confirmed with more than 800,000 rentals, an increase of 400% compared to 2018 (date of entry into service of the new vel’OH!). The self-service bicycle service also recorded more than 50,000 short-term tickets in 2021. This performance is all the more remarkable as the year 2021 was strongly impacted by activity and travel restrictions linked to sanitary conditions. .
