Jean-Jacques Savin: the body of the French adventurer found dead in his overturned boat

Sad news. Jean-Jacques Savin is a resident of Arès in the Arcachon basin. On January 1, he left Sagres, in the south of Portugal, to try to row across the Atlantic in a canoe. Its goal ? “Become the Dean of the Atlantic“, he explained. For this 75-year-old man, who celebrated his birthday aboard his canoe entitled “Bold“, it is a means of “taunt old age“, he had assured. However, as revealed by Jean-Marc Morandini this day, his relatives were very worried since they no longer had any news from him. This day, it is a sad news which was announced since the body of the adventurer was found inside his boat. This one had been “spotted by the Portuguese Navy rescue team but no diver had been able to get on board because of the weather conditions”, can we read. “We are of course very concerned“, said Manon, the daughter of Jean-Jacques Savin. “Everything was immediately implemented in coordination with the French, Portuguese and American sea rescue services”, she concluded. Research that led to a terrible tragedy.

They were worried. The relatives of Jean-Jacques Savin confided in the columns of AFP. “Unfortunately, since 00:34, we no longer have any contact or any manifestation from him.”, they had indicated before adding: “Our concern is great“. Moreover, the adventurer had “triggered two of her two distress beacons“, is it specified. It was a way for him to indicate that he is “in great difficulty“. They were desperately waiting for a sign from him. For this, the adventurer’s team was “in contact with the CROSS Gris-Nez (Pas-de-Calais), in charge of rescue at sea for French sailors“. While everyone was trying to discover the slightest information allowing them to find Jean-Jacques Savin, the communication manager for the team of volunteers had indicated that he “was, at the time of the last contacts, off the north of Madeira and was en route to the small island of Ponta Delgada, in the Azores archipelago, to repair“. Indeed, the septuagenarian encountered problems with “failures of electric batteries and solar collectors” due to bad winds.

Jean-Jacques Savin: was he used to sailing?

This is not the first time that Jean-Jacques Savin has gone to sea with his “raft eight meters long, 1.70 m wide, equipped with two cabins, fore and aft, and a rowing station, in the middle“, can we read. In 2019, he had passed “more than four months in a barrel-shaped boat three meters long and 2.10 m in diameter to cross the Atlantic alone, tossed about by the winds and currents“, is it then clarified. Delighted with this new trip, he said “going on vacation to the open sea, I’m taking three months of vacation“, he had rejoiced.
