Joe Biden has been inducted into office as the new US President. In his first speech, he invoked the cohesion of the citizens.
The term of office of the new US President Joe Biden (78, "Promise me") and his Vice President Kamala Harris (56) has officially started. Biden took his oath of office shortly before 6:00 p.m. German time on January 20. As previously announced, his predecessor Donald Trump (74) and his wife Melania Trump (50) did not attend the ceremony. Therefor were Harris' predecessor Mike Pence (61), as well as the ex-presidents Barack Obama (59) with his wife Michelle (57), Bill Clinton (74) with his wife Hillary (73) and George W. Bush (74) present.
Shortly after pop superstar Lady Gaga (34, "Chromatica") sang the US national anthem, Harris first swore her oath. After a performance by Gaga's colleague Jennifer Lopez (51), who sang "America the Beautiful" among other things, it was Biden's turn. There were no major incidents during the ceremony itself. Before that, the US Supreme Court had received a bomb threat, as the Supreme Court announced. After a check, however, no evacuation was necessary.
The President's first speech
In his first speech as President of the United States, Biden conjured up the unity of the citizens of the United States. Among other things, he mentioned the storming of the Capitol and called for abuses such as violence and racism to be addressed. Today in the US cultural melting pot it is not about the victory of a presidential candidate, but about the victory of democracy.
Biden wants to be the president of all Americans and "fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did". The new president also addressed the corona pandemic and called for a short, silent prayer for the more than 400,000 victims in the USA to date. After the speech of the new president, country musician Garth Brooks (58) performed "Amazing Grace".
