After getting engaged in August, TV star Jonathan Scott, 45, and actress Zooey Deschanel, 43, are planning their wedding. And a very specific instrument plays an important role in this, as he has now revealed. It is of particular importance to him because his ex-wife forbade him to do so during their wedding.

“I’m proud of my Scottish heritage”

The “Property Brothers” host already has some very specific plans for his upcoming wedding to the “New Girl” actress. He revealed this in the podcast “You Made It Weird With Pete Holmes. In it, Scott described how he really wanted to hear the sound of bagpipes on the big day. That was exactly what was not possible at his first wedding in 2007 because his first wife Kelsey Ully was against it. “It should have been a warning sign for me,” he said now. “I’m Scottish. I’m proud of my Scottish heritage.” However, his bride at the time didn’t take this into account: “We had this beautiful outdoor wedding… our friends gave us their place by the lake. It was wonderful. But she forbade me from having the bagpipes played at any point during the wedding.” He continued, “I understand it’s too loud in a church or something, but we were out by the lake.”

It is now even more important to him that there are bagpipes at his second wedding. The instrument is no problem at all for his fiancée. “Zooey and I talked about what we wanted to do,” Scott said. “She knows what’s important to me, what hurt me. I’ve had other relationships where the person ended up doing the same thing that hurt me in a previous relationship.” The women would have known what had happened in his previous life and would have acted the same way anyway.

There was already bagpipe music at the engagement in August, which also suited the location: the proposal took place in Edinburgh Castle. Scotland has a very special meaning for the groom-to-be because his father comes from there. At his twin brother Drew’s wedding in 2018, both men wore kilts at the ceremony.

Apart from the music, not much is known about the upcoming wedding. “We just basked in the bliss of the engagement and didn’t really discuss anything,” Deschanel said recently in an interview with “People”. But she added: “We love having a party.”

Both were already married

The couple met in August 2019 while filming an episode of James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” with their siblings. They were spotted holding hands for the first time the following month. Just a week earlier, the actress announced that she had separated from film producer Jacob Pechenik, 51, with whom she has two children, after four years of marriage. She was previously married to singer Ben Gibbard, 47, from 2009 to 2012. It won’t be Scott’s first marriage either. He was married to flight coordinator Kelsy Ully (born 1988) from 2007 to 2019.
