Another surprise visit from a foreign leader. On Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Ukraine. He visited Irpin, a town northwest of kyiv, seeing the damage caused by airstrikes and fighting. He met Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn there, along with his Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly. The Canadian then spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while the latter’s wife Olena Zelenska met First Lady Jill Biden, who was visiting Ukraine during her trip to Eastern Europe.

After visiting the ruins of Irpin, Justin Trudeau attended an awards ceremony by Volodymyr Zelensky. Among those honored was Patron, a small Ukrainian army sniffer dog who helped soldiers detect mines and explosive devices in Chernihiv. “Boss was extremely happy to meet a new friend from Ukraine. Even if Mr. Trudeau did not have Patron’s favorite piece of cheese on him, ”wrote the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations on Facebook.
