Disney + is working on a “King Kong” series, which should illuminate the origin of the king of Skull Island as a live-action adaptation.

The king of Skull Island, giant ape King Kong, has already made it into series production as a cartoon. Now the Disney+ streaming service is apparently working on its first live-action appearance away from the big screen. Like the US industry website “Deadline” exclusively wants to know that a series with the working title “King Kong” is in a very early stage of development. Nevertheless, some details are already known.

According to the report, the series deals with the origin of what is probably the most famous monkey in film history and its mystical home, Skull Island. The only possible human protagonists are the natives of the unexplored island.

James Wan (45) was brought on board as a producer. The director made a name for himself above all in the horror genre, he shot the first part of the “Saw” series as well as “Insidious” and “Conjuring 2”. With “Fast & Furious 7” and “Aquaman” he also looked impressively into the action genre.

Not the first attempt at a “King Kong” series

According to the report, a screenwriter has already been found in the person of Stephany Folsom. Among other things, she worked on the scripts for “Thor: Day of Decision” and “A Toy Story: Everything obeys no command”. She also worked on the screenplay for the “Lord of the Rings” series, which starts on September 2nd on Amazon Prime Video. Folsom will also serve as executive producer alongside Wan.

A real series adaptation of “King Kong” was said to have been planned for the first time five years ago, under different management at the time. Ultimately, however, nothing came of it. In the meantime, Kong has experienced more than just a comeback in the cinema: in 2017 he reported back impressively with “Kong: Skull Island”, in 2021 he even had to compete against the Japanese giant lizard in “Godzilla vs. Kong”. Round two in the battle of the giants has been announced for 2024. It has not yet been announced when the series can be expected on Disney+.
