Kitchen scale, how to choose it? Our readers tested 4: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Why use a scale in the kitchen? If the equivalence tables for converting grams or centiliters into cups or spoons help us out well in an emergency, these conversions remain very approximate. To cook like a chef and obtain the desired texture and flavor, precision is essential, and this is even more true in pastry. Most recent scales deliver a measurement to the nearest gram. To weigh salt, spices, ground coffee or baking powder, opt for a model accurate to the nearest milligram. On the contrary, if you cook in quantity, check its maximum tolerance. If overloaded, it could break!

For fans of Anglo-Saxon recipes, choose a scale displaying metric and imperial measurements (ounce: oz / pound: lb). Be careful when converting volumes: one US fluid ounce (fl oz) is not equal to one UK imperial fluid ounce.

For the rest, choose according to your habits: tare, backlit display, mass conversion in centiliters or even the possibility of setting the automatic shutdown function… The assurance of not being interrupted in your momentum!

“I appreciate that plastic is recycled”

This model, made from 70% recycled plastic, has been well thought out. The user sets the screen lighting time himself, measures weighings less than 1 kg with an accuracy of 0.5 g, and can even convert grams into centiliters!

Use : its measurement of up to 5 kg has proven to be very useful for some of my cooking or baking recipes!

The +: the function of weight to liquid conversion is easy to use and the weighings remain reliable. Energy in AAA batteries is very practical, we always have them in a drawer, which is not the case with button batteries.

THE – : its large top is a little bulky in the cupboards. I regret that the screen is not backlit for better reading comfort.

My opinion : I adopted this accessory!

No batteries required”

Equipped with a beautiful glass top and LCD touch screen, this scale promises to appeal to design lovers. It is possible to weigh up to 10 kg and charge your phone by induction!

Use : to cook and make my pastries, I generally use a traditional scale from the 1970s.

The + : no batteries are required, it charges via USB and the cable is provided. It is both stylish and space-saving. Its large, flat, rimless surface allows for weighing in large bowls. The screen display is clear. The user guide is easy to understand and concise. The ability to select grams, pounds or ounces mode is really practical. Thanks to the Tare function, several ingredients can be weighed individually in a row, without having to remove them.

THE – : it cannot measure liquids. The charging function detects the smartphone in a really precise location that is not easy to find.

My notice : I am convinced by this model even if the function allowing you to recharge your smartphone seems a bit gimmicky to me.

“More green thanks to its replaceable battery”

This device, which aims to be more durable, is equipped with a battery that is easy to change yourself in the event of a decrease in performance. It would be enough to recharge it for 3 hours via USB to be able to use it for up to 6 months (or carry out around 500 weighings).

Use : I don’t cook much. I only use a measuring cup to measure quantities.

The +: it is very precise, to the nearest milligram. It is also greener thanks to its replaceable battery and recharges quickly. Easy to maintain and use, light and thin, it can be stored anywhere. Finally, as its buttons are plasticized, it does not get dirty.

THE – : it is very sensitive: when the surface is not perfectly flat, you have to wait a few seconds for the measurement to stabilize. I’m afraid its stainless steel tray will get damaged in my kitchen drawers. I kept the original box to protect it.

My opinion : it’s perfect for those who cook or monitor their nutrition.

“With the bowl provided, no need to look for a container

This very reasonably priced kitchen scale is sold at Lidl. It comes with a removable tray and a weighing bowl.

Use : this scale allows precise weighing, to the nearest gram and up to 5 kg. With it, I am not limited in my recipes.
The +: it is easy to maintain thanks to its removable silicone tray which is suitable for the dishwasher. And thanks to the bowl provided, you no longer need to look for a container! I also like that I can set a timer.
THE – : the LCD screen is very small. I also doubt that the plastic bowl is very durable.
My opinion : its value for money is excellent.
