(Reuters) – The Kremlin on Friday blamed the stalled peace talks on Ukraine, saying Kyiv’s demands lacked clarity.
In a telephone exchange with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that “Ukrainian leaders constantly make contradictory statements. This does not allow us to fully understand what the Ukrainian side wants.”
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said he had tried several times to arrange a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war, but that Russia did not yet seem ready to start serious peace talks.
“There are things to discuss with the Russian leader. I’m not telling you that…our people are eager (that I decide) to talk to him, but we have to face the realities of what we are going through,” he said. said Volodimir Zelensky in a speech Friday to an Indonesian think tank.
“What do we want from this meeting? … We want to take back our lives… We want to return to the life of a sovereign state on its own territory,” he added.
The last face-to-face peace talks date back to March 29. Contacts continued remotely for some time, but both sides now claim they have ceased.
