“Krone” community series – St. Johann’s mayor has set the course

In the center of the district capital of Pongau, the buildings grow into the sky. Current projects are terminated, new ones have already been created. However, some take longer.

Cranes, site fences, noise. Right in the center of St. Johann im Pongau. Directly opposite the municipal office, a building complex has been demolished and rebuilt in recent years. Traffic in the direction of Wagrain flowed slowly and right through the center. The imminent end of the construction work, the traffic obstructions and a new, temporary roundabout in front of the “Silbergasser” house, also a long major construction site, should improve everything. Günther Mitterer has shaped the face of the district capital since 2003. The incumbent mayor will no longer stand in the next municipal elections. “Now is the time, there is something else too,” says the mayor, who will be celebrating his 65th birthday in 2024, with satisfaction. New projects by the old mayor A lot has happened in the community in the past 20 years. The center has practically been renewed, and a lot has happened around the city center. The commercial area in the north, for example, has become an important location for industrial companies. Mitterer has recently pushed a few things: the elementary school extension on the Salzach, the childcare facility on the former Bundesforste area – and the future meeting zone in the village. And for the entrance to the city center, roughly at the height of the district administration, another residential and office ensemble is currently being planned. However, a small spot in the middle of the town remains undeveloped: the former post office area. “It took years before we were able to buy the property,” says Mitterer. It will still take a few decisions before there is also construction. In coordination with the post office, bank and private individuals, it is not easy to implement the project. Mitterer’s successor will then probably reap the laurels.
