Lack of staff – care as a permanent construction site in Salzburg

More and more beds cannot be filled due to the lack of staff in Salzburg. The city facilities alone are currently short of 50 full-time employees.

As of the beginning of February, there were 94 places available in the five senior citizens’ homes in the city of Salzburg alone – even though many senior citizens are looking for a place. The reason: lack of staff. 50 full-time positions are currently open. But the problem is not new. As the responsible city councilor Anja Hagenauer (SPÖ) reports, she warned of the situation five years ago. At that time she addressed the public under the title “Salzburg before the nursing collapse”. Not enough has happened so far, which is also confirmed by the head of the facilities, Christoph Baumgärtner. “We finally have to take action!” Working groups are no longer necessary. “For example, we could implement the transitional care model for five years,” says Baumgärnter. For him, models for foreign workers are too complex. Many would therefore look for work in Germany and be absent in this country. The situation isn’t getting any better either. In the city alone, up to 22 nurses will retire this year. The example of the Senecura scandal home shows how drastic the situation is. When the case became known, 90 senior citizens were still living there under dire circumstances. The country then limited the number to 50. Currently there are only 44 residents.
