lady Sarah Chatto59, kept her wedding similar to her mother’s Princess Margaret, 71, did throughout her life: She didn’t care about conventions and designed the most beautiful day of her life according to her own taste. On July 14, 1994, the artist met the actor Daniel Chatto, 66, in front of the altar. But contrary to her glamorous and hard-partying mother, she decided to keep the event a bit more modest for a wedding in her circles. Only 200 guests were invited to St. Stephen Walbrook Church in London. But the chosen ones experienced at least two moments that are likely to remain memorable to this day.

Lady Sarah Chatto relied on tradition – without too much royal pomp

The bride certainly didn’t want to cause a stir – at least not with overly royal references. On the contrary: According to research by the Daily Mail, she allegedly rejected the Queen’s offer to lend her a tiara from her casket for this special day. Instead, she literally had her own way and wore a tiara made especially for her by the renowned British family company Wartski, which became known as the Snowdon Floral Tiara because it consists of three floral diamond brooches as well as additional floral elements. A touching tribute to her parents: the brooches were a gift from her father Antony to her mother in 1960 on the occasion of their wedding.

United for their daughter: Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, and Princess Margaret entered the church as the bride’s proud parents, despite their long-broken marriage.

She had her dress made by the then popular British designer Jasper Conran, 63. The timeless gown was made from layers of ivory georgette fabric with a square-cut bodice and long, flowing sleeves. Her bridesmaids were also outfitted by the fashion designer – one of them: Princess Anne’s, 73, daughter Zara Tindall, 42, who at the time still had the last name Philips. The design of the wedding dress also influenced the design of the outfit for the companions on the way to the altar. The only noticeable differences were the round necklines and the bright pink and pastel flowers in the young women’s hair – and of course the bridal bouquet, for which Sarah chose a white floral display.

Lightning wedding with turbulence

However, the ceremony can be described as anything but pompous and royally lengthy. Sarah and Daniel are married in just 30 minutes. Only then did the long wait begin: the bridal couple’s driver was apparently not informed that the wedding ceremony would be completed in a hurry and overslept his mission. Minutes that seemed almost endless passed until the two of them were finally able to get into their limousine.

But another incident that was unpleasant for everyone involved, albeit unavoidable, caused even more of a stir: the first public meeting took place in front of the church Prince Charlesthe current King of Great Britain, 74, and Princess Diana† 36. A hit for the press, because only a few days earlier the royal had publicly admitted that he was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, 76, had. So the event, which was planned to be quite discreet, suddenly became a source of unpopular headlines for the British royal family.

However, the turmoil on that July day did not turn out to be a bad omen for the marriage for the bride and groom. Sarah and Daniel are still married today and are the proud parents of their two sons Samuel, 27, and Arthur, 24. Sarah still flies under the royal radar and devotes herself entirely to her art.
