In a crash on Saturday evening, entrepreneur Antonio T. * († 37) and student Francesca R. * († 25) lost their lives. Two German tourists are probably to blame: their luxury motorboat hit the two Italians’ wooden boat with full force. You were very likely traveling at too high a speed, as Italian investigators say of the «La Repubblica».
Even worse: The two 52-year-old family fathers from Munich (D) are said to have been drunk on the death trip across the lake. Italian media report that they watched the European Championship match between Germany and Portugal in the small town of Salò in the afternoon – beer is said to have already been drunk.
Too high speed
Later it was on the luxury boat and off to the other side of the lake. There they are said to have treated themselves to a dinner in the Il Sogno restaurant in Garda: there was a fish platter and two glasses of white wine each, according to a waiter’s statement on “Bild”. Then they rest with the boat back to Salò. Tragedy broke out along the way.
At around 11 p.m., the motorboat caught the Italian couple’s wooden boat at high speed. The 37-year-old was apparently immediately dead by the impact. His girlfriend was thrown into the water and drowned. Divers found her body after hours of searching at a depth of about 100 meters. Her legs were severed.
Traces of the destroyed wooden boat were found on the 52-year-old man’s boat. How exactly the crash came about is not yet known. Not even why the Germans didn’t get help.
It could have been due to the influence of alcohol: According to eyewitnesses, one of the drivers is said to have been so drunk that he fell into the water after mooring in the port of Salò. At the port, the two men – a CFO and a commercial clerk – are said to have continued to drink, as their lawyer confirms. They allegedly didn’t find out about the accident until the next day.
“You heard a bang”
As «La Repubblica» reports, the Germans were not very cooperative during the interrogation. It is a mystery to the investigators how the two men could not notice the impact. Her lawyer Guido Sola explains the “Bild”: “You heard a bang. The boat’s nose goes up quite a bit when you hit the gas. They turned their heads and saw a piece of wood. ”
The two accused are now back in Germany. They are being investigated for double negligent homicide and hit-and-run. A blood test should show whether they were really drunk or under the influence of drugs on the speeding ride across Lake Garda. (ouch) * names changed
