Lance Armstrong is “proud” of Jan Ullrich

“It is impossible for me to put into words what it means to me (and millions of others) to see that this man is back and healthy,” wrote the American in the caption. “I am so proud of you, Champ, and I remember that I will always love you deeply and will strengthen my back,” he addressed Ullrich.

Ullrich was the only German cyclist to win the Tour de France in 1997, and Olympic gold medal in Sydney followed in 2000. Six years later he was banned from the Tour de France due to doping allegations, and in 2007 he ended his career. After that, he struggled with alcohol and drug problems, and is said to have gone into therapy in 2018.

Ullrich and Armstrong were considered eternal competitors at their heyday. In the period from 1999 to 2005 Armstrong won the Tour de France seven times, Ullrich finished second five times. Armstrong was also convicted of doping in 2012.
