Large volume of traffic – the traffic jam in front of the Gotthard north portal from the previous evening has cleared – News

  • A week before Easter, long columns of cars formed in front of the Gotthard north portal heading south.
  • The traffic service Viasuisse reported 14 kilometers of traffic jams with a waiting time of more than two hours at noon. In the evening, the length of the column in front of the north portal decreased to 1 kilometer.
  • After midnight, no more traffic jams were reported and around 4 a.m. webcam images still showed images of free roads to the south.

On Saturday morning Viasuisse said that the traffic jam between Erstfeld and Göschenen (UR) had been going on for eight o’clock. By 10 a.m. the column had already grown to 12 kilometers. At midday the traffic jam was 14 kilometers long and the waiting time was 2 hours and 20 minutes. At 3:30 p.m., Viasuisse also reported a traffic jam of the same length and a waiting time of up to two and a half hours. At around 8.30 p.m. there was still a 1 kilometer traffic jam.

Due to the start of the holiday season in some Swiss cantons and some German federal states, a traffic jam like before the pandemic was expected. However, 12 kilometers on Saturday afternoon are a lot, it was said.

According to SRF Meteo, the weather models for the Easter days from April 15 to 18, 2022 still tend to show high-pressure weather. On the north side of the Alps in particular, however, there could be occasional weak disturbances and sometimes bring some rain.

Protected by the Alps, the south is rather spared from these disturbances, but some rain is also expected here from Saturday. Up to Good Friday, the maximum values are usually above 20 degrees, after which the probability of precipitation increases and the temperatures drop somewhat.
