Stuttgart makes Leipzig tremble briefly late

For a long time, VfB Stuttgart does not even come close to the opposing goal – but in the last few minutes the leadership of RB Leipzig is in danger. But despite a missed penalty, things managed to jump to the top of the Bundesliga.

RB Leipzig has taken the lead in the Bundesliga again at least until Sunday evening. At VfB Stuttgart, still without a win at home, the favored Champions League round of 16 scored a deserved 1-0 (0-0) thanks to a goal from Dani Olmo (67th) and is initially one point ahead of defending champions Bayern Munich, who FSV Mainz 05 only receives on Sunday.

Special incident: Kobel (Stuttgart) saves Forsberg's penalty kick (22.)

Leipzig awarded a higher victory, among others, in the person of Emil Forsberg, who failed with a penalty kick against the good VfB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel (22nd). Stuttgart tried it at the beginning with very high pressing, but Leipzig was able to free itself well, had more play and also the better chances.

When the good Angelino (3rd) and Marcel Sabitzer (12th) shot, Kobel reacted confidently. The goalkeeper performed his greatest act with the penalty kick from Forsberg, who had previously been fouled by Pascal Stenzel: He directed the Swede's shot against the crossbar with a great defensive foot, from where the ball jumped far in front of the goal line.

Anton misses the great opportunity

Leipzig was largely unimpressed by this. The team of coach Julian Nagelsmann, once head of his VfB colleague Pellegrino Matarazzo at TSG Hoffenheim, showed the more mature playing system. The best defense in the league also rarely allowed the Stuttgart to develop offensively. The Swabians had the best opportunity shortly before the break, when Sasa Kalajdzic failed to hit a sharp cross from Silas Wamangituka (43.).

For all its superiority, however, Leipzig lacked the punching power in the penalty area and callousness in the end for a long time against the not always firm Stuttgart defense. Olmo's goal came at a good time, however, after VfB had better offensive actions in the first 20 minutes after the break. The Spaniard only had to push a slightly deflected flank from Angelino over the line from close range.

Despite all the dominance, things got tight for Leipzig in the end. Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi saved strongly against Waldemar Anton, who appeared in front of him (86th). Stuttgart then came close to the opposing goal a few more times, but this did not result in another great chance.
