Last October, Léa Salamé had made remarks on the Islamists in France in We are live. According to the Ethics Council, the journalist did not respect certain rules governing the profession.
Laurent Ruquier and Lea Salame had received Jean-Luc Melenchon last October on the set ofWe are livebroadcast on France 2. During the interview, the journalist had affirmed, without supporting evidence, in front of the candidate for the presidential election of France Insoumise that“There are neighborhoods where the Islamists have taken power today in France”. The assertion had been refuted by Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Léa Salamé then concluded the exchange with a “If you say so…”
Following these remarks, the Council for Journalistic Ethics and Mediation (CDJM) had been seized seven times. Three of his referrals felt that Léa Salamé’s tone was “disrespectful” and “aggressive”. The CDJM has just made its decision, as reported TV 7 days, this Thursday, February 3. If the CDJM considered that “journalists are free in the tone and style they adopta choice that falls within the editorial, even if it is regrettable that it varies according to the interlocutors”, he also stated that the content of the referrals was “partially founded”.
Léa Salamé would have “taken on board an assertion, without supporting it with facts”
For the CDJM, certain rules of ethics which govern the profession of journalist were not respected. According to the instance, the response of Léa Salamé “If you say so…” “even imply that she knows that the phrase ‘there are neighborhoods where the Islamists have taken over’ is true.” If the CDJM specifies that in the exchange which followed the companion of Raphaël Glucksmann indicates that she “ask the question”, “this does not erase the fact that she took an assertion on her own, without supporting it with facts”. The body also indicated that as of January 11, nearly three months after the broadcast, it had not received any response from the journalist on the subject.
