In the middle of the legislative rounds, Emmanuel Macron flew to Romania on Tuesday, gaining momentum with the campaign, but not without calling the French to a “start” before his departure. Something to worry his camp a few days before a high-risk second round.

TO ANALYSE

It is an image that is surprising. Emmanuel Macron standing at the desk in front of the presidential plane at Orly, engines on, ready to take off. Indeed, the head of state in the campaign flew to Romania on Tuesday afternoon. But before leaving, he held a mini press conference.

Macron wants to win before the second round

What really surprised was the message sent by Emmanuel Macron: a little war in Ukraine and a lot… of legislative elections. Before this speech, the Elysée had warned that the head of state wanted to explain his upcoming trip, but the president’s entourage had never mentioned the fact that Emmanuel Macron was going to focus his message on the legislative elections.

But Ukraine and elections are not so dissociated in the eyes of the tenant of the Élysée. “Nothing would be worse than adding a French mess to the world mess”, he assures. A message between the lines can be read this way: it’s me or chaos.

A strategy already in place for the presidential election

This is in any case the strategy of the head of state to try to mobilize voters around his candidates. It’s exactly the same as during the presidential election, even if it can give the impression of a certain panic, even a lack of serenity five days before the second round.
