The sensor would offer a very impressive level of optical zoom, while making the designs of equipped smartphones much more aesthetic.

LG Innotek will officially present this new photo sensor at CES in Las Vegas, which will be held in early January 2023, but did not resist revealing its main characteristics now.

Zoom up to 9x and without protrusion on the back of the smartphone

The latest smartphones released across all brands have dramatically increased the quality of their photos, with more advanced telephoto lenses and bigger sensors to suck in the most light.

As a result, the photo blocks are getting bigger and now take up considerable space on the back of our phones. We have seen this for example with the multiplication of sensors, up to 5 lenses on the same device, or the size of the sensors of the iPhone 14 Pro Max which protrude very far from the case of the device.

LG Innotek, with its new sensor, will increase the optical zoom while offering a component that keeps a flat back and eliminates all protuberances on equipped smartphones.

A promising new sensor that will be revealed more at CES

This new sensor will offer an optical zoom of between 4x and 9x, with the promise of high precision for each image taken. LG Innotek also indicates that its sensor can be used for both photo and video. Today, many smartphones can go further, but through a digital zoom that alters the quality of each photo if pushed to its limits.

To achieve this feat, the Asian company has worked to reduce the zoom actuator, a component similar to that found on reflex cameras, to immediately switch from one zoom level to another and obtain a immediate focus on the subject. The displacement of the objective has a precision of the order of a micrometer. This unique sensor also allows manufacturers who will use it to save space in the smartphone case in order to integrate, for example, a larger battery or other components.

LG Innotek finally indicates that it has worked closely with Qualcomm, and its new photo sensor is fully compatible with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. We will now have to wait for CES to possibly see the first results obtained by this sensor, and why not know the first smartphones of the year to be equipped.
