The Baltic countries are also seeking to connect their electricity grid to that of Scandinavia.
The symbol is strong. Lithuania has stopped importing Russian gas since Friday 1er April. “From now on, Lithuania will no longer consume a cubic centimeter of toxic Russian gas”, tweeted Ingrida Simonyté, the Lithuanian Prime Minister, on Sunday, recalling that her country “is the first in Europe to refuse imports of Russian gas”.
At the forefront of Vladimir Putin’s desire for expansion, the Baltic countries are constantly asserting their independence from their powerful neighbour. Lithuania will therefore have been the first to take an important step, by cutting off imports of Russian gas. Just as it was the first country to declare its independence from the USSR in 1990.
