Harley-Davidson CEO Jochen Zeit announces that a second LiveWire brand electric motorcycle
will see the light of day in the second quarter of 2022. The Del Mar model should be lighter and less expensive.
Harley-Davidson reveals its first electric motorcycle in 2019, under the name LiveWire. Last year, the firm announced that LiveWire was no longer a simple range but a brand in its own right, 74% owned by the company and sharing the same CEO. As part of a conference dedicated to the economic situation of Harley-Davidson, the latter officially announced the expansion of the LiveWire catalog with the arrival of the Del Mar model.
What do we know about LiveWire Del Mar?
According to the information revealed by Jochen Zeit, who, let’s remember, has great ambitions around electricity, LiveWire Del Mar will be very different from its predecessor from a technical point of view. The new motorcycle will use the Arrow engine architecture, which was developed entirely in-house by the team at LiveWire.
All future models of the LiveWire brand should also be based on the Arrow modular platform, and Del Mar will therefore be the first to experiment with it. It will have a unibody chassis, unlike the LiveWire One. The battery is the main element of the chassis, which will optimize the efficiency, cost and weight of the vehicle.
LiveWire S2 Del Mar will also be equipped with a 21,700 cylindrical cell battery and a lithium-ion cell format, as found in companies such as Tesla, Samsung or LG.
A more affordable model?
For the record, the first LiveWire motorcycle was marketed at a price of €33,900 including tax when it was launched. Harley-Davidson seems to want to change strategy with this new version, defined as a model ” more accessible, lighter and more agile “.
This price drop is made possible largely thanks to the Arrow design mode, which optimizes costs.
The new LiveWire motorcycle will be available in three categories: S2, S3 and S4. The S3 and S4 categories will be small models of electric motorcycles that are slower, and therefore even more affordable. According to the explanations of Jochen Zeit, the S3 range will be developed in partnership with the Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco.
