#WirWerdenLaut criticizes corona management in schools

Pupils lack a political signal that preparations are being made for the fall. They no longer want to support the current Corona management. In the #WirWerdenLaut campaign, they express their demands.

In an open letter to representatives of the federal government, more than 100 student representatives criticized the corona management at German schools and called for better infection protection measures. the letter is primarily aimed at Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger and Health Minister Karl Lauterbach. At the same time, the protest movement started one with the hashtag #WirWerdenLaut petition with more than 15,000 signatures so far.

“We children and young people have been enduring the pandemic and the associated restrictions for almost two years. We are conscientiously adhering to the measures imposed to protect ourselves and others. But the situation in our schools has become unbearable after two years,” says it in the letter. A “load limit has been reached” for schoolchildren.

It is important to fight the pandemic by all means, it said. However, there is no clear political signal that preparations are being made for the autumn. “We can no longer support your current policy, which is failing us all, mentally draining and physically endangering.” The current search plan is irresponsible and lacks solidarity.

The student representatives also expressed demands to improve protection against infection. “First of all, the top requirement is: talk to us and not about us,” said Johanna Börgermann, board member of the student council in North Rhine-Westphalia, on ntv. Other demands in the letter are air filters, free FFP2 masks, PCR pool tests and high-quality rapid tests.

Since the current graduating class is the one most affected by Corona so far, the Final grades are adjusted if they deviate from the performance level. According to Börgermann, there are learning gaps and deficits that cannot be made up for in the coming months. The omicron wave has seen more infections in schools, making the situation even more real. “And yet politicians didn’t do anything,” said Börgermann.

The President of the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK), Karin Prien, had announced as a result of the #WirWerdenLaut campaign that the letter would be discussed with the KMK Presidium. She offered the representatives a public interview.
