League of Legends is a game that is played, won and lost at 5. But despite the collective nature of the MOBA, there are still several individual distinctions to reward personal performance. Among them is the title of Segment rookie in LEC which allows to highlight a small nugget. As a reminder, eligibility does not really depend on age or seniority. To be considered a rookie, you must not have participated in a qualifying league for the Worlds in the past. For this reason, a player like Malrang who had played in South Korea (LCK) and Turkey (TCL) couldn’t win the award, even though it was his first-ever LEC split.
The last winner (Summer 2021) made a lot of noise, especially within the French community, since it was from adam. If since then, the tricolor has been a little less to his advantage with Team BDS, we hope for the Spring 2022 rookie that he will still be on top in a few months.
Misfits Gaming in the spotlight
It’s Polish jungler Lucjan”Shlatan“Ahmad, who was rewarded by the panel of experts (coaching staff, media, production, etc.). He finished ahead of Flaked (G2 Esports) and Unforgiven (MAD Lions). Beyond his individual level, this former LFL resident was also able to count on the good collective performance of Misfits Gaming. With a young and relatively inexperienced roster, the Rabbits managed to slip into the top 4 (3rd in the regular season). It was not won in advance and we imagine that this very good run weighed in the balance. Moreover, we find mersa (support) in the players regularly mentioned by voters. We also saw some votes for Sertuss, SK Gaming’s midlaner.
Obviously, Misfits Gaming failed to shine in the playoffs, losing 1-3 to Rogue and 0-3 to G2 Esports. But Spring’s rookie title was only for the regular season and votes were sent out before the playoffs began. We therefore keep hope that the MVP will be given to Vetheo, the most hyped Frenchman of the moment on League of Legends.
Among the former winners, not all have succeeded in breaking through
Before Shlatan, all those who have been elected rookie of the Split (LEC or LCS EU) have not had great careers in Europe. If Adam’s case will surely be debated, the little prince of top lane is far from being the worst! He still has plenty of time to bounce back and we hope to find him in great shape during the Summer Split with Team BDS.
Among the former rookies who have completely disappeared from the radar, we can mention the Korean Na “night“Gun-woo (Summer 2016), the jungler Pridestalkr (Summer 2017) or the Italian Jizuke (Spring 2018). The latter nevertheless participated in the Worlds with Team Vitality, but he clearly did not have the career predicted for him at the time. We must therefore not rest on our laurels and Shlatan has every interest in continuing to work in order to progress and impose himself over time. Breaking into esports is complicated, but staying on top is even more so!
