A fire broke out in a car park at London Luton Airport on Tuesday evening.
Flight operations are temporarily suspended until Wednesday afternoon. Passengers were asked not to travel.
Flights from Switzerland are also likely to be affected.
Like the airport on its website communicated, flight operations will remain temporarily suspended until Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. local time, 4:00 p.m. Swiss time. A major fire broke out in the parking garage of Terminal 2 on Tuesday evening and flight operations were suspended while emergency services fought the fire. Four firefighters and an airport employee were taken to hospital after inhaling smoke.
Stranded travelers
An eyewitness told the British news agency PA that initially only a single vehicle burned. “A few minutes later, most of the top floor was in flames, car alarms went off with loud explosions of cars going up in flames,” the man was quoted as saying. According to the BBC, many travelers were initially stranded at the airport because they could not take their flights or because their cars were in the burning parking garage.
People are asked not to travel. The fire also produced a large amount of smoke. If the airport remains closed until the afternoon, flights from Switzerland will also be affected. On Wednesday morning, a flight from Zurich and one from Geneva would take off for this London airport.
