macabre irony diluted in entertainment

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – WHY NOT

This sequel to the animated film The Addams Family (2019) has the good idea to center its plot on Wednesday Addams, one of the most memorable and endearing characters of the franchise. A character who seems cut out for the time: with her large forehead and her quilts, the gifted little girl drags her spirit of distinction and her misanthropy wherever she goes, indifferent to the activities that normally occupy young people of her age. The actresses who played her made her unforgettable: Lisa Loring in the 1964 series and, later, Christina Ricci in the films by Barry Sonnenfeld (1991, 1993).

Inspiration failure

This is what we can only regret in front of this animated version: the absence of bodies coming to lend their charisma to the splendid characters created by Charles Addams (1912-1988) and, what is more, a visual universe broken down. ‘inspiration. The macabre irony is largely watered down, immersed in a bath of dispensable pop references and a telephoned plot that mixes road-movie and quest for origins. Pure entertainment without extra soul, the film will occupy children and snatch two or three smiles from adults, while waiting for the Netflix series in preparation, also devoted to the character of Wednesday, and signed Tim Burton.

American animated film by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon (1 h 33).
