We were talking about it a few days ago, the speeds offered by the latest MacBook Pro on Wi-Fi 6
are pitiful to say the least. The device can nevertheless count on its gargantuan autonomy to be forgiven… and in this case, a slight link of cause and effect cannot be ruled out.

Hailed by all, the energy efficiency of the ARM M1 chips developed by Apple allows the latest MacBook Pros to develop an impressive level of performance on battery power… while maximizing autonomy. In his test of the MacBook Pro 16 under M1 Pro processor, YouTuber Jarrod’s Tech compares the autonomy of the device to that of around twenty competing laptops, equipped with AMD and Intel x86 processors. We discover (without great surprise) that the new flagship of Apple arrives far ahead of its opponents in terms of longevity on battery.

A gargantuan autonomy

In video playback on YouTube, the MacBook Pro 2021 thus manages to total 1,195 minutes of autonomy, or 19.9 hours according to Jarrod’s Tech.

Second in the ranking, far behind the MacBook Pro, the Dell G15 manages to last 746 minutes (or 12.4 hours) in the same context of use with its AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor and its RTX 3060. This figure seems to us to be overestimated. Tested by us a few months ago, the device had not exceeded 7:30 in video playback on Netflix.

A configuration designed for autonomy

Note that the MacBook Pro used by Jarrod’s Tech is equipped with an M1 Pro processor comprising 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores. As a reminder, the faster M1 Max chip has 10 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores. The MacBook Pro also has a large 100 Wh battery (the maximum allowed in the cabin by airlines). The Dell G15 is content for its part with a smaller battery: only 86 Wh, but it is clear that this difference does not entirely explain the difference in autonomy observed between the Dell machine and that of Apple.

The energy efficiency of the ARM architecture used by the M1 chips is the source of the impressive autonomy of the MacBook Pro 2021. It could also be that other parameters come into play. For example, it seems that Apple has deliberately restricted the performance of its Wi-Fi 6 modem to maximize autonomy at the expense of speeds.
