Macron receives the Australian Prime Minister to reconnect with Paris

PARIS, July 1 (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron, who received the new Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Elysee Palace on Friday for a working lunch, hailed his desire to “rebuild a relationship of trust” between Paris and Canberra, after the crisis linked to the cancellation of a contract worth around 40 billion dollars relating to an order for 12 French submarines.

“This trip (…) marks this desire to rebuild a relationship of trust between our two countries, a relationship based on mutual respect, after (…) a difficult phase (…), which is also based on a strategic and historical partnership”, declared the Head of State welcoming Anthony Albanese.

The government of former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in September canceled a 40 billion dollar (38 billion euro) contract with Naval Group to acquire 12 French nuclear submarines, in favor of a partnership with the United States and Great Britain, provoking a diplomatic crisis with Paris.
