Mad Max Fury Road: this rap star almost got the role of Tom Hardy

What if Eminem had played Max Rockatansky instead of Tom Hardy in George Miller’s latest film? Back on this improbable alternative cast, mentioned in the book “Blood, Sweat & Chrome” by Kyle Buchanan.

Played by Mel Gibson in the first three films of the Mad Max franchise that made the 80s roar, the solitary hero of the post-apocalyptic world built by George Miller changed his face in Fury Road, in 2015.

Now embodied by Tom Hardy in this totally original fourth opus, Max Rockatansky almost took on the features of Jeremy Renner, Armie Hammer, Michael Fassbender or even Joel Kinnaman – also interested in taking part in the race – but also of a rap superstar known throughout the world.

Indeed, as we learn in the book Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road of Kyle Buchanan, Eminem himself had been approached by George Miller to play the lead role in the film.

United International Pictures

“He had done 8 Mile, and I found it very interesting, I thought he had this quality”says George Miller in Buchanan’s book. “We did the first Happy Feet with the late Brittany Murphy, who also starred in 8 Mile, so I asked her how he was and if she might be interested. She told me wholeheartedly how great he was. wonderfully talented.”

As Buchanan then tells in his book, the filmmaker therefore tried to offer Eminem to join the adventure. But without success.

“We contacted him, but it didn’t go any further because we had planned to shoot the film in Australia, and he just didn’t want to leave home.”

Moreover, still according to the book Blood, Sweat & Chromeanother music star has also been considered to join the cast of Mad Max Fury Road. Indeed, George Miller had met Rihanna to play one of the five young women who accompany Furiosa on her journey, but in the end, she was not on the trip either.
