In France, the manufacturing production index stood at 100.3 points in June 2023 (base 100 in 2015), according to a press release from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) published at 8:45 a.m. Thus, production in the manufacturing industry fell by 1% over one month and fell by 0.2% over one year.
In May, the index was 101.3 points (figure revised by INSEE), an increase of 1.2% over one month and an increase of 2.4% over one year.
The keys to understanding this indicator: There are several indices of industrial production (IPI). They are calculated for different branches of industry and construction. The manufacturing production index is the most important within industry, with a weight of around 85%.
What are they for ? IPIs make it possible to follow the evolution of industrial and construction activity. Combined with other indicators (employment, inflation, etc.), they make it possible to monitor the country’s economic situation and anticipate reversals.
How are they calculated? INSEE calculates the IPIs every month from branch surveys of a sample of businesses. Data are seasonally and working day adjusted. IPIs are published no later than 35 days after the end of the month in question (except in January and September, 40 days).
