Market: Limited volumes for a shortened session

(CercleFinance.com) – The Paris Bourse should open in slight decline Friday morning in trading volumes which promise to be very limited for a session shortened on Christmas Eve.

Around 8:15 am, the ‘future’ contract on the CAC 40 index – delivery January – fell by seven points to 7,086 points, announcing the start of the session without much change.

The Parisian market – like most other places in the Euronext group – will close at 2:05 p.m. today before a long weekend linked to the Christmas festivities.

Many European stock exchanges will remain closed outright today, such as Frankfurt and Zurich, and the London Stock Exchange will close at midday, promising tight liquidity in the stock markets.

The CAC 40, which remains on three consecutive sessions of increase, had ended yesterday’s session with a gain of 0.8% to 7106 points, in an already tight trading volume of 2.7 billion euros.

It is, however, the fifth best closing in its history.

The flagship index has been on the rise again this week and is heading for a gain of nearly 28% since the start of the year, which would represent its strongest annual performance since 1999.

Investors should, however, find it difficult to find new catalysts to drive the market further today.

No indicator is on the day’s program, analysts’ notes are scarce or even nonexistent and US equity markets will be closed all day for Christmas Eve.
