Martin Scorsese was awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for his life’s work at the Berlinale. Wim Wenders gave the laudatory speech.
The Berlinale celebrates one of the greatest legends of international cinema: In Berlin, master director Martin Scorsese, 81, was awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for his life’s work in the evening. The 81-year-old filmmaker listened to the eulogy of his German colleague Wim Wenders, 78, at the Berlinale Palast, visibly moved. In his speech, he praised the famous US director, among other things, as an “extraordinary storyteller” and “reigning king of cinema”.

Director legend Scorsese attended the gala event on Tuesday evening with his 24-year-old daughter Francesca Scorsese, 24, who is also a filmmaker and has introduced her father to a younger generation of fans in the past with a series of loving TikTok videos. In addition to laudator Wenders, numerous greats from the German film scene such as director Fatih Akin, 50, and actresses Sibel Kekilli, 43, and Karoline Herfurth, 39, were present at the Berlinale Palast to honor the Hollywood director. Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth, 68, also didn’t miss the event, where Scorsese repeatedly seemed to be fighting back tears.
Previously, guests at the Berlinale Palast saw a screening of Scorsese’s mafia classic “The Departed” from 2006. The filmmaker received the only Oscar of his career so far for the work with superstars Leonardo DiCaprio, 49, and Jack Nicholson, 86, in the leading roles and successful career.
Scorsese’s current work “Killers of the Flower Moon” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, 80, has been nominated ten times at this year’s Oscars on March 10, including for Best Film and Best Director “.
