Marvel: why this character of the Eternals was missed

Did you wink at the appearance of one of the characters introduced in the post-credits scene of “The Eternals”, a Marvel film directed by Chloé Zhao? The special effects supervisors return to his case.

On March 11, The Eternals will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray in France. The opportunity to review Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao’s first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with this story of superpowered beings responsible for protecting the Earth and its inhabitants. Or (re)take a look at the two post-credits scenes.

If the second, which features Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) and the voice of Blade (Mahershala Ali), was generally appreciated, the first received more criticism. Not so much for the appearance of Harry Styles as Eros, brother of Thanos, but more for the presence of his sidekick Pip the Troll, entirely in computer graphics and voiced by Patton Oswalt.

In a long interview given to The Wrapthe special effects supervisors Stéphane Ceretti and Matt Aitken did not dodge the criticism concerning this passage of the film, greatly reworked during the period of reshoots. “[À l’origine]there was already Harry Styles, but the scene took place in the ship with all the other Eternals”explains Stéphane Ceretti.

“It was a bit sadder and not as empowering, so it didn’t really resonate. And it was Chloe who came up with this idea to add Pip the Troll at the end of the film. Which we did pretty quickly in the end (…) It was a challenge to get this done in time, but we did what we could.”

The two men then specify that they did not benefit from the time necessary to make improvements and rework the design of the character, because held by the worldwide release of the Marvel film.

But they do not deny the scene so far: “I’m still convinced it’s a fun time“, continues Stéphane Ceretti. “I think there’s always room for fun stories later. And I hope we see more of this character because he’s hilarious.” In a sequel to The Eternals? Or another Phase IV installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
