Mask requirement: what does it mean for our skin?

Especially for people with sensitive and blemished skin, the protective masks can often lead to skin problems. How do we prevent that? An expert explains.

Protective masks are mandatory in all federal states. A measure that is supposed to protect against infection of fellow human beings as well as against infection. However, anyone who generally struggles with skin problems already knows that my skin will not tolerate that. Skin expert Dr. Susanne von Schmiedeberg explains what the masks really mean for our skin – and how we can get problems under control.

Skin problems from protective masks

In the meantime I have treated a number of patients whose skin reacted to wearing a mask. The impairments range from skin irritation to pimples and acne to more severe skin infections and allergic skin changes around the mouth and nose area.

If the same thing happens to you, you don't have to despair and you should definitely not wear the mask anymore. There are a few simple things that Dr. Susanne von Schmiedeberg should pay attention to in order to avoid such "side effects":

  • Use the mask only once. If you have reusable masks, wash them off after use.
  • The mask should be changed daily, if necessary several times a day. If the mask is damp, it should be disposed of. This is the only way to protect ourselves and others. In this way, we also prevent further impairment of the skin. Td care
  • Hands off your face! Certain germs from the hands multiply particularly strongly on damp skin, on the mucous membranes and under the mask.
  • The fact is: the better the condition of our skin, the lower the risk of skin infections or irritations. Therefore, you should pay attention to a consistent care routine that is tailored to your skin. How that looks is of course different for everyone. However, you shouldn't overdo it with hygiene either. Wet wipes and disinfectant wipes are NOT suitable for the face. If the skin under the mask feels damp, you can dab it off with a normal, dry facial tissue. In general, make sure to clean the skin very gently, this protects against irritation. Moisture and soothing care products are of course never wrong.

If you have no problems with impurities or irritations, you should still follow these rules. They help protect the skin. You know, she'll thank us someday …
