Massive effects expected – Deutsche Bahn train drivers’ union calls for a strike – News

  • In the collective bargaining dispute with Deutsche Bahn, the train drivers’ union GDL has called for a multi-day strike starting on Wednesday.
  • The union in Frankfurt am Main announced that employees should stop working from January 10th at 2 a.m. to January 12th at 6 p.m.
  • The strike at DB Cargo will begin on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

According to its own statements, Deutsche Bahn assumes that the GDL strike will have a “massive impact” on rail operations and has announced that it will provide information “as quickly and comprehensively as possible”.

The railway sharply criticized the new GDL strike and announced that it would immediately take legal action to stop it. An urgent application for an interim injunction will be submitted to the Frankfurt am Main labor court, the railway said.

GDL rejects negotiation offer

The GDL explained that the negotiations with Deutsche Bahn had already failed at the end of November because of the company’s “refusal attitude” to “hold discussions about legitimate core demands with the GDL”.

The railway also did not take advantage of a “Christmas truce” declared by the union “in order to counteract industrial action with a negotiable offer”. The GDL rejected a new offer from Deutsche Bahn on Friday to negotiate more flexible working hours as an “insubstantial and poisonous offer”.

The union is demanding more wages for train drivers, a bonus to compensate for inflation and a reduction in working hours.
