Mercato LoL: party from G2, Nelson signs for two years at Excel Esports

Good news for Nelson, following his benching at G2 Esports. The Singaporean comes from rjoin Excel Esports and take the role of coach of the League of Legends team during this 2022 LEC season. Rumor has it he would have signed for 2 years with the British team.

At G2, it must be admitted that Nelson’s performance was not what we expected. During the LEC Summer Split, G2 was eliminated in the third round of the playoffs by Fnatic on the score of 3-1. Behind, they failed to win their qualification for the 2021 World Championships. Add to that the catastrophic results of G2 during the Spring Split and the structure will not have won anything in 2021, moreover, without qualifying for any international event.

G2 however had everything to shine in 2021, the team that signed Rekkles during his transfer windowSo expectations were high for the British. Following these disappointing results, the management of G2 and more particularly Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez, boss of G2, announced that “the time has come to begin a major team reconstruction project, a project that had to start by selling qualified players as weak links for the roster“.

Following this announcement, Martin “Wunder” Nordahl (recruited by Fnatic), Martin “Rekkles” Larsson (recruited by Karmine Corp), Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle, Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann (recruited by Team BDS) and Sng “Nelson” Yi-Wei left G2. Only Mikyx found himself without structure, despite the drop in its buyout to € 250,000, originally 1.5 million euros, reduced by Ocelote because the player could not find a new team. Offers have been made, but Mikyx was not interested.

As for Nelson, he has been at the forefront of the League of Legends esports scene since 2012. Arriving at Excel at the dawn of the 2022 LEC season, many hopes rest on this new coach to make the British formation shine. Excel Esports had finished the regular season in 7th place last year, with 7 wins and 11 losses, tied with Astralis. They failed to qualify for theLEC Summer Split 2021 playoffs. The last day of the season, the defeat against G2 definitely cost them their place in the playoffs.

Nelson would therefore have signed for 2 years at Excel, given the latest rumors. However, he is not the only one to have joined the training since Finn “Finn” Wiestål, the new Excel toplaner was recruited during the transfer window. LEC season 2022 will begin this January 14 and as for the first match of Excel, it will take place at 8 p.m. opposite G2 Esports, the opportunity for Nelson to prove himself facing its old structure.
