The terrible accident happened almost ten years ago: Michael Schumacher, 54, sustained serious injuries in a fall while skiing in the French Alps on December 29, 2013 and was treated in a hospital in Grenoble. Since then, however, little has been known about the former Formula 1 driver’s health. In the interview, brother Ralf Schumacher, 48, uses thoughtful tones that shed some light on how seriously the family’s life has changed since the accident.

Ralf Schumacher: “Life isn’t fair sometimes.”

“Unfortunately, sometimes life isn’t fair. We have to accept it,” were his brief but meaningful words in an interview with “Bunte”. The sight of his nephew and niece gives him comfort. “When I see his children Gina-Maria and Mick, my heart smiles.” He is there for the family should they seek his advice. “They go their own way,” says the former racing driver.

It is an extremely rare insight that the 48-year-old provides into his brother’s private life. Long-time companions only speak up every now and then, but usually provide little information about Michael Schumacher’s actual state of health. There is a reason why so few details are made public despite the great interest in the racing legend’s well-being, as his lawyer Felix Damm reveals.

Michael Schumacher’s private life should be protected

The family has therefore consciously decided to keep his condition a secret. “It was always about protecting private matters. Of course, we discussed a lot about how that was possible. So we also considered whether a final report about the state of health could be the right way. But that wouldn’t have been the end of it and there should have been constantly updated water level reports,” he explains in an interview with “Legal Tribune Online”.

He understands that Schumi’s fans want to know how he is doing, but he also believes that “the vast majority of fans can handle it well and also respect the fact that the accident has set in motion a process in which private shelter is necessary is and will now continue to be observed,” said Damm.
