The father of a teenager who shot several classmates at a school in the US state of Michigan in 2021 has been convicted of negligent homicide.
The perpetrator’s mother received the same sentence a few weeks earlier.
The then 15-year-old gunman killed four students and injured another eight people.
At the end of 2021, a then 15-year-old shot four classmates at a high school in Oxford Township near Detroit in Michigan, and another eight people escaped with injuries. A few weeks ago, the shooter’s mother was convicted of four counts of negligent homicide. The same verdict also fell on the father in a separate proceeding.
After the crime, allegations were made against the mother and father because they had bought the murder weapon and allowed their underage son access. They are also said to have ignored warnings from the boy’s school environment.
It is the first time in the United States that a parent of a shooter has been convicted of personal responsibility for such a crime. The sentence is not yet known and will be announced at a later date.
The shooter himself was sentenced to life in prison in 2023. He had pleaded guilty to all 24 charges. He did not testify against his parents.
