Microsoft has added a new feature to edge. Entitled “Drop”, it allows you to share a file, or simply store it, in a location integrated into the Navigator…to find it on all other devices where Edge is installed.

The thing is done through a new side panel symbolized by an icon in the shape of a paper plane. Just drag and drop any file into this panel, similar to History or Collections, so it can be found in the same place in Edge on any other device (fixed or mobile) where you installed the browser. All it takes is to wait for the sync to finish.

A function currently reserved for Edge Canary

Currently limited to certain users of Edge Canary (v.104), this new functionality for sharing and storing files between several devices also concerns notes. Neowin thus explains that it is possible to synchronize a note by simply typing it via a message box accessible in the “Drop” side panel.

For this new function, Microsoft is clearly inspired by the “Saved messages” offered by the encrypted messaging service Telegram… at least to one (big) detail. As pointed out NeowinTelegram allows unlimited storage, while Edge seems to restrict itself to the storage space available on the user’s OneDrive account.

A currently restricted deployment

As we said, not all Edge Canary users necessarily have access to “Drop”. For the time being, Microsoft is content with a drop-by-drop deployment, limited to a small portion of users only. To find out if you are one of the lucky ones, all you have to do is install Edge Canary and check the presence (or not) of the option to activate “Drop” under the “Appearance” tab from the settings. of the browser.

Finally, note that this feature appears a few weeks after Microsoft deployed, also in beta, a native VPN for Edge.
