The Surface Laptop 5 evolves timidly. It now features newer processors and is natively powered by Windows 11.
At its Surface products event, Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop 5, an update to its lineup that focuses on performance above all else and carries over the design of its predecessors.
Powered by an Intel CPU of 12e generation
The great novelty is therefore the switch to Intel processors of 12e generation. According to Microsoft, the Surface Laptop 5 models are on average 50% more powerful than their Laptop 4 series counterparts. Two CPUs are offered: the Intel Core i5-1235U and the i7-1255U. The first mentioned is only available in the 13.5-inch format, the second is offered in both 13.5 and 15 inches. The graphics part is provided by an integrated Iris Xe Graphics GPU.
Numerous memory configurations are offered, with 8, 16 or 32 GB of LPDDR5x RAM, and 256, 512 GB or 1 TB of SSD storage. The Redmond firm evokes an autonomy which goes up to 18 hours in standard use for the most compact model, and up to 17 hours for the most imposing. But we know that these estimates are sometimes fanciful.
Wireless connectivity is provided by the Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 standards. As for the connection, we have available a USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB-A 3.1 port, a 3.5 mm audio jack and the Surface Connect home connector.
The first Surface Laptop sold natively under Windows 11
The computer weighs 1.3 kg in 13.5 inches and 1.5 kg in 15 inches. It is equipped with a touch screen which displays a definition of 2,256 x 1,504 pixels on the first and 2,496 x 1,664 pixels on the second. Microsoft has opted for a 3:2 ratio, more relevant for productivity and work than for multimedia and entertainment uses.
The screen is Dolby Vision IQ certified, and the speakers, Dolby Atmos. For videoconferences, we are entitled to a 720p HD webcam and two microphones. Unsurprisingly, the laptop comes directly with Windows 11.
The 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 5 will be released in platinum, sage, black, and beige colors. The 15-inch version will be offered in platinum and black. However, availability and prices in euros have not yet been communicated.
