Microsoft makes threats come true: Windows 11 now with a watermark and the update will follow in the fall?

WINDOWS 11

Windows 11 will receive the first major feature update from Microsoft in the fall. Many PCs could never achieve this. Because the manufacturer implements measures against unwanted installations.

  • Microsoft is preparing the next major feature update 22H2.
  • However, there is bad news for installations on unsupported PCs.
  • Because the next big Windows 11 update could never reach these computers.

Microsoft has provided Windows 11 with significantly higher system requirements, which actually exclude some modern systems. The result: users install the update in different ways, bypassing the restrictions. So far, this has not had any consequences, but that could change soon.

Because these PCs are excluded from the recently released pre-release 22581. The update includes the pre-release version of the upcoming feature update 22H2 – or Sun Valley 2 – and is available for beta testers in the Windows Insider Program.

No more updates for incompatible PCs?

The attempt to install on incompatible PCs is terminated prematurely by the Windows update. Instead, a message appears in the installation window stating which requirements are not met. For example the TPM module or the correct processor. Users can then only close this window.

Anyone who has installed the operating system past the requirements could be excluded from a system update for the first time in the fall. This measure is not entirely unexpected. Microsoft had already indicated when the new operating system was released that incompatible PCs could be locked out of updates.

After the watermark, the update lock threatens

So far, however, this threat has not been carried out. However, the Redmond-based company has at least taken matters seriously when it comes to watermarks. The recently released optional update KB5011563 brings the feature to your system. By the next patch day at the latest, the white inscription will then be part of your desktop – and you can only remove it manually via the registry.

With Windows 11, Microsoft has opened the next chapter in the history of the operating system and cleaned up legacy issues. Here you can find out what innovations await you now and in the future.

The same fate could befall the update lock – because Microsoft originally said that an upgrade on incompatible PCs was not possible. Until knowledgeable users have found detours. It remains to be seen how the situation develops once the feature update is released.
